Ó MITHIDHÍN—IO Myhiden, O Meehin, O'Meehin, Meehin, Meehen, Meehan; 'descendant of Mithidhín' or 'Mithighein' (born in June); the name (1) of an ecclesiastical family of Ui Maine who were coarbs of Clontuskert, near Ballinasloe; and (2) of an ecclesiastical family in Co. Leitrim who were coarbs of St. Molaise at Ballaghmeehin, in the parish of Rossinver. About the middle of the last century, the termon lands of Ballaghmeehin were still farmed by a Mr. Meehin, a member of this ancient family. The anglicised forms of this surname are apt to be confounded with those of Ó Miadhacháin, which is an entirely different surname and much more widespread.
