de STONNDÚN—XIde Stauntoun, de Stanton, Staunton, Stanton, Stundon, Sdundon; Norman 'de Stanton,' i.e., of Stanton, a frequent place-name in England. The Stantons were amongst the earliest of the Anglo-Norman invaders. They settled in Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Cork and Mayo. The Stantons of the last-named county, who were followers of the Burkes, obtained extensive possessions in the barony of Carra, and formed a clan after the Irish fashion. They took the Irish surname of Mac an Mhíleadha, i.e., son of the knight, probably from their ancestor, Milo de Stanton, as did also the Stauntons of Cork.
