de STÓC—XIde Stoke, de Stokes, Stokes, Stoakes; Norman 'de Stoke,' i.e., of Stoke, a common English place-name, from Old English 'stoc,' a village. Monosyllabic surnames of local origin often add on the genitive s after the manner of patronymics. This surname came into Ireland about the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, and was common in many parts of the country.
