The Flattery Family
(Crest No. 196. Plate 58.)
THE Flattery family is descended from Milesius, King of Spain, through the line of his son Ir. The founders of the family were Flachertach, King of Connaught, A. D. 729, and Conal Kearnach, son of Amergin, of the Irian race. The ancient name was O’Cahal and signifies “Son of Beautiful.” The possessions of the sept were located in the present Counties of Cork and Limerick.
The O’Flatterys and O’Cahills were Chiefs of Fianchora, in ancient Thomond, embracing the Counties of Limerick and Clare.
