Ó ROBHARTAIGH—I—O Roverty, O Rowarty, Roarty; 'descendant of Robhartach'; also written Ó Rabhartaigh (which see), and generally corrupted to Ó Raithbheartaigh, which see; the name of at least two distinct families, anciently located respectively in Tirconnell and Sligo. The former family were coarbs of St. Columcille on Tory Island, off the north coast of Donegal; the latter, who are of Ui Fiachrach race, were seated in the parish of Skreen, in the barony of Tireragh, where they had extensive possessions. They are named by MacFirbis among "the pillars of Skrin and the props of the Kings of Ui Fiachrach." They were dispossessed by the Scottish settlers in the early part of the 17th century. There was also a Meath family of the name, but it was probably a branch of that of Tirconnell.
