Ó hEIGNIGH, Ó hÉIGNIGH—IO Hicknie, O Hignie, Hegney, Heagney, Haigney; 'descendant of Eigneach'; the name of an Oriel family who in the 11th and 12th centuries were lords of Fermanagh and sometimes of all Oriel; (2) of another family of the same race who were chiefs of Clann Chearnaigh, apparently in the east of the present Co. Armagh; and (3) of a Mayo family who were anciently chiefs of Clann Laoghaire, in Tirawley. The name is now almost universally changed to Ó hÉighnigh, or Ó hÉinigh, which see.
