Ó Fathaigh

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

Ó FATHAIGH—IO Faughy, O Faghy, O Fahy, O Faye, Faughy, Faghy, Fahey, Fahy, Fay, Foy, and, by 'translation,' Green; also written Ó Fathaidh; 'descendant of Fathadh' (older fothadh, foundation); the name of a family of Ui Maine in Co. Galway, whose patrimony, which was known as Poblewinterfahy, lay in the barony of Loughrea, and a considerable portion of which remained in the possession of the family down to the Cromwellian confiscations. There is also an old and respectable family of the name in Co. Tipperary. The name, according to O'Donovan, was sometimes anglicised Green from its resemblance to the Irish word 'faithche,' a green, or field.
