Ó CONNAGÁIN—IO Connegaine, O Connigaine, O Conegan, Connigan, (Conyngham, Cunningham); 'descendant of Connagán' (diminutive of Conn); the name (1) of a family of Ui Fiachrach, formerly seated in the parish of Magh Gamhnach, now anglicised Moygawnagh, Co. Sligo; and (2) of a family of Ui Maine in Co. Galway, of the same stock as the O'Maddens. At the end of the 16th century this surname was common in Clare, Limerick, Kerry, Cork, Offaly, Kildare and Monaghan, as well as in Mayo and Galway, and is now nearly everywhere anglicised Cunningham.
