Ó Blighe

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

Ó BLIGHE—IIO Blie, O Blye, Bly, Bligh, Blighe; 'descendant of Blighe' (the Norse personal name Bligr). MacFirbis mentions two families of this name in Connacht, one of Clann Bhriuin, descended from Echean who was King of Connacht when St. Patrick came to Ireland; and the other of Ui Fiachrach, descended from Aonghus, grandson of Fiachra, from whom the Ui Fiachrach are named. This latter family were hereditary proprietors of Dunfeeny in the barony of Tirawley, Co. Mayo, about nine miles north-west of Killala. The name is still in Mayo.
