MAITIÚ—VIII—Matheu, Mathew, Matthew, Mathews, Matthews; 'son of Matthew.' There are several scattered families of this name in Ireland. Of these the most distinguished were the Mathews of Thomastown, Co. Tipperary, to which belonged the celebrated Apostle of Temperance, Father Theobald Mathew.
