FEÓIRLING—VIIIVeerlin, Verlin, Verling; 'son of Feorthling' (an Anglo-Saxon personal name, made Farthing by the Normans. Feóirling is at the present day the Irish for a farthing). 'Elias filius Rogeri fili Farthini' occurs in the Dublin Roll of Names, A.D. 1216; and Warinus Ferthing de Karlel was a member of the Dublin Guild-Merchant A.D. 1226. The family must have settled early in Co. Westmeath, where Farthingstown marks their place of abode; but for centuries back the name, under the form of Verlin and Verling has been peculiar to Co. Cork.
