de CANNTUAL, de CANTUAL—XI—de Cantewell, de Cantwell, Cantwell; i.e., 'of Cantwell,' or 'Kentwell,' a spot somewhere in England. This family came to Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion and settled in Kilkenny and Tipperary, where they obtained large grants of land from the Butlers. The original seat of the family was at Cantwell's Court, about four miles to the north-east of Kilkenny. The Cantwells are still a well-known and respectable family in Kilkenny and Tipperary.
