de BUITILÉIR, de BUITLÉIR—XII—Butler; Norman 'le Botiller,' 'le Buitiler,' i.e., the butler. This surname originated in the appointment by Henry II of Theobald Walter, the first of the family who settled in this country, to the office of chief butler of Ireland. Theobald, besides being made chief butler, was granted the baronies of Upper and Lower Ormond and other great possessions, and became the founder of one of the most illustrious of the Anglo-Norman families in Ireland.
