BÓIDICÍN—VIIIBawdekyn, Baudekin, Boudekyn, Bodekine, Bodkin; 'son of Baldkin' (diminutive of Baldwin). The Bodkins, who are said to be a branch of the Fitzgeralds, appear to have first settled at Athenry and taken an active part in the affairs of that town. Later on, apparently towards the end of the 14th century, they removed to Galway, where they acquired a considerable amount of property and became one of the 'tribes' of that city, of which many of them were mayors and sheriffs down to the time when it surrendered to Sir Charles Coote in 1652.
