TÓIBÍN—XITobine, Tobyn, Tobin; Norman 'de St. Aubyn,' 'de St. Obyn,' Latin 'de Sancto Albino,' i.e., of St. Aubin, a town in Brittany, famous as the scene of a battle between the French and Bretons, aided by the English, in 1488. The Tobins settled early in Tipperary and Kilkenny, whence they spread into the neighbouring counties of Waterford, Cork and Limerick. The head of the family was styled Baron of Comsey, in Co. Tipperary.
