SOIRTÉIL—XIIScorthals, Schorthals, Sertell, Sertill, Shorthall, Shortall, Shortell, Shortle, Surtill; Anglo-Saxon 'Scort-hals,' i.e., short-neck, a nickname or descriptive name; Langhals also once existed. This family, which, to judge from the name, is of Anglo-Saxon origin, probably came to Ireland early in the reign of Edward I. They settled in Co. Kilkenny where they became very influential. Their chief seat was at Ballylorcan, but they had many other castles in the barony of Iverk.
