SIONÓID—VIIISignot, Synod, Synote, Synot, Sinott, Synott, Sinnott, Synnott; 'son of Sigenoth' (an Anglo-Saxon personal name); the name of an English family who came to Ireland at the time of the invasion and settled in Wexford, where they have ever since been both numerous and influential. In the reign of Elizabeth, the Sinnotts were great 'loyalists,' and were rewarded with grants of the confiscated lands of the MacMurroughs. David Sinnott was governor of Wexford when that town was besieged by Cromwell. The Sinnotts lost their estates in the Cromwellian and Williamite confiscations. There were also ancient families of the name in Dublin and Tipperary.
