SCIRÉID, Skirret, Skerrett. This surname, according to Hardiman (History of Galway, p. 19), was originally Huscared, which was shortened to Scared. The Skerrets were an old and respectable Galway family. Richard Scared, or Skeret, was provost of Galway in 1378.
