RÚT—VIII—Route, Ruth, Routh, Roth, Rothe; 'son of Rot,' Norse Hrutr, red-haired. Rot occurs in Domesday Book. Robert Rot de Kilkudbricht was a member of the Dublin Guild-Merchant, A.D. 1226. In later times, the name was chiefly associated with Kilkenny, of which city the Rothes were one of the chief families. The most illustrious bearer of the name was Dr. David Rothe, Bishop of Ossory, at the time of the Confederation of Kilkenny.
