RÉID—XII—Read, Reade, Reede, Reid, &c.; Norman 'le Rede,' i.e., the red, from the complexion of the face or hair. This surname came into Ireland about the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion. It is sometimes incorrectly translated Giolcach, which see.
