Randal
RANDAL—VIII—Randulf, Randolf, Randell, Randall; 'son of Randulf,' a very common Anglo-Norman personal name. It was Latinised, Rannulfus, Ranulfus, Ranulphus, as well as Randulfus, showing that the older pronunciation in England was Rannulf. The dropping of the final f, which was usual in names ending in -ulf, caused it to be confused with Rannall, the English form of Reginald (see Raghnall above). Randulph and Randal as Christian names are for this reason used as equivalents, especially among the MacDonalds, of Raghnall which is really Reginald.
