Ó Treasaigh

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

Ó TREASAIGH—IO Trassy, O Tressy, O Trasey, Trassy, Tressy, Tracy, Tracey, Treacy; 'descendant of Treasach' (fighter); the name (1) of a Leinster family who were anciently lords of Ui Bairrche, a district embracing the barony of Slievemargy, in Leix, but are long dispersed through Leinster and Munster; and (2) of a Connacht family, of the same stock as the O'Maddens, who were seated in the south-east of Co. Galway, but are long dispersed. The name is now common in many parts of Ireland. The diminutive Ó Treasacháin appears to have been in use in the midlands, but is probably obsolete; at least, it has no distinct anglicised form.
