Ó TARPA, Ó TARPAIDH, Ó TARPAIGH—IO Tarpy, Tarpey, Torpy; 'descendant of Tarpach' (stout, sturdy); the name (1) of a family of Ui Fiachrach who possessed a townland in the parish of Skreen, Co. Sligo, which from them was called Fearann Ui Tharpaigh, now anglicised Faranyharpy; long dispersed through Connacht; and (2) of a family of Corca Laoighdhe in South-West Cork, where they were followers of the O'Learys. There are a few households of the name still in Munster; also written Ó Tórpa, Ó Tórpaigh.
