Ó SLUAGHADHÁIN, Ó SLUAGHAIDHÍN, Ó SLUAGHÁIN, Ó SLUAIGHÍN—IA Sloan, Sloane, Sloan, Slown, Slone, Sloyan, Sloyne; 'descendant of Sluaghadhán,' or 'Sluaghaidhín' (diminutive of Sluaghadhach); probably a variant of Ó Sluaghadhaigh, which see; a not uncommon surname in Co. Mayo, where it is anglicised Sloyan and Sloyne. The Sloanes of Antrim and Down are of Scottish origin, but the Gaelic form of the surname is the same. Sir Hans Sloane, the founder of the British Museum, was of this family.
