Ó SEALBHAIGH—IO Shallowe, O Shallie, O Shelly, O Shielly, Shalvey, Shallow, Shalloe, Shally, Shelloe, Shellew, Shelly, Shealy, Sheily, &c.; 'descendant of Sealbhach' (possessor, proprietor); the name of a branch of the Corca Laoighdhe in South-West Cork, whose seat was probably at Baile Uí Shealbhaigh, about a mile to the east of Dunmanway. The Four Masters, under the year 1140, record the death of Domhnall Ua Sealbhaigh, erenagh of Cork, 'pillar of the glory and splendour of Munster.' About the same period, four of the name were bishops of Cork, and one of Lismore. There was probably a distinct family of the name in the north of Ireland. At the end of the 16th century it was found in Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Donegal.
