Ó Saoraidhe

Rev Patrick Woulfe
1923

Ó SAORAIDHE, Ó SAORTHAIGH, Ó SAOTHRAIDHE—IIO Seyry, O Serie, Seerey, Seery, Freeman, Earner; a substitute for the old Westmeath and Tirconnell surname Ó Síoghradha, or Ó Sioghraidh, which see. It is sometimes anglicised Freeman, on the erroneous supposition that it is derived from 'saoraidhe,' a freeman. In Mayo and Galway, where it is pronounced Ó Saorthaigh, or Ó Saorthuide, as if from 'saothruidhe,' a labourer (earner), the anglicised form is Earner.
