Ó RUANADHA, Ó RUANAIDH—IO Rownoe, O Roney, Roonoo, Rowney, Rooney, Roney, &c.; 'descendant of Ruanaidh' (hero); a common surname, at the end of the 16th century, in Ulster, Leinster and Connacht. The annalists, however, have but comparatively few notices of the family. Ceallach Ó Ruanadha, chief poet of Ireland, died in 1079; Eóin Ó Ruanadha, who was chief poet to Magennis, died in 1376. Ó Ruanaidhín (which see) is a variant.
