Ó LAIDHEANÁIN, Ó LAIDHGHEANÁIN, Ó LAIDHGHNEÁIN—IO Laynan, O Loynen, O Leynen, O Lynan, O Leynam, Lynan, Lynam, Lynham, Lyneham, Lineham, &c.; 'descendant of Laidhghneán' (snow-birth); the name of an ecclestiasical family in Leinster, who were erenaghs of Ferns and of St. Mullins, Co. Carlow. Many distinguished ecclesiastics of the name in various parts of Ireland, but probably of this family, are mentioned in the Annals. The name, which is still common in Leinster, is now generally anglicised Lynam. The Irish form was also variously written Ó Laidhneáin, Ó Laigheanáin, and Ó Laighneáin.
