Ó hAONGHUSA—IO Heanesey, O Hennesy, O Hensey, Hennessy, Hensy, Hinsy, Henchy, Hinchy; 'descendant of Aonghus' (one-choice); the name (1) of an Offaly family who were lords of Clann Cholgan, a district coextensive with the barony of Lower Philipstown; (2) of a Meath family who were lords of Ui Mac Uais, in the barony of Moyfenrath; (3) of a Bregian family who were chiefs of Gailenga Beaga, in Meath and the north of the present Co. Dublin; and (4) of a Dalcassian family in Thomond. The name is now common throughout Munster and Leinster.
