Ó GAOITHÍN—IO Gighine, O Gihine, O Gehin, O Gahan, Guiheen, Gweehin, Guihen, Guighan, Guihan, Geehan, Gihan, Gihon, Gahan, and, by translation, Wynne, Wyndham; 'descendant of Gaoithín' (diminutive of gaoth, wind, a 'pet' form probably of Maolghaoithe, chief of the wind); the name (1) of a Leinster family who were formerly chiefs of Siol Elaigh, now the barony of Shillelagh, in the south-west of Co. Wicklow, and are still numerous in the neighbouring county of Wexford, where the name is anglicised Gahan; and (2) of a Connacht family who are numerous in that province, but sometimes disguised as Wynnes and Wyndhams.
