Ó GAMHNÁIN—IO Gawnaine, O Gownane, Goonane, Goonan, (Guning, Gunning, Caulfield); 'descendant of Gamhnán' (diminutive of gamhain, a calf); the name, according to MacFirbis, of a family of Clann Mhuirthuile in Connacht; now very scattered. It is anglicised Goonan in the neighbourhood of Limerick, Guning in Clare, and Caulfield in Galway and West Mayo. Compare with Ó Gamhna.
