Ó GÁBHÁIN—I—O Gavan, Gavan, Gaven, Gavin; 'descendant of Gábhadhán' (diminutive of gábhadh, want, need, danger); the name of at least two distinct families, the one of Munster, the other of Connacht, origin. The Munster family is a branch of the Corca Laoighdhe, in Southwest Cork. Also Ó Gáibhín, which see.
