Ó FAGHARTAIGH—IO Fayerty, Fagarty, Fagarthy, Whearty; 'descendant of 'Faghartach' (noisy); the name of a family of Ui Fiachrach who were anciently seated at Tulach Spealain, in the barony of Carra, Co. Mayo; now found chiefly in Leinster. It is the same as Ó Fathartaigh (which see) of Co. Galway, and by the aspiration of the initial f has in some places become Ó hAghartaigh, which see.
