Ó BEÓLLÁIN—IO Beollaine, O Beolane, O Bowlane, O Bolan, Bolan, Boland, Bowland, &c.; 'descendant of Beóllán' (Bjolan in Landnamabok); the name (1) of an ecclesiastical family in Co. Sligo, the heads of which were for many centuries erenaghs of the Columban church at Drumcliffe, and were noted for their hospitality; (2) of a Co. Sligo family of the Ui Fiachrach race who were seated at Doonaltan, in the barony of Tireragh, where it is still numerous; and (3) of a Dalcassian family, who are stated by Keating, but erroneously, to be descended from Mahon, son of Kennedy, and brother of Brian Boru, the real descent being from Mahon, son of Torlough (MacFirbis, Gen. p. 648).
