Ó BEARGHA—IO Barrie, O Barry, Barrie, Barry; 'descendant of Beargha' (spear-like); the name of a Co. Limerick family who were anciently lords of Iveross, in the barony of Kenry. There need scarcely be a doubt that many of the Barrys of East Limerick are of this race, and not of Anglo-Norman origin. There was another family of the same name in Tirawley, Co. Mayo, but, according to O'Donovan, it is extinct. It is certainly not the surname which is anglicised Berry in that county, the Irish of which is Ó Béara, which see.
