Mac DAIBHÉID—VM'Daveyd, M'Deyt, MacDavid, MacDavitt, MacDaid, MacDevitt, MacDivitt, Davitt, Devitt, Daid, Dade, &c.; 'son of Davet' (a diminutive of David); the name of a branch of the O'Dohertys of Inishowen who derive their name and descent from David O'Doherty who fell in battle in the year 1208; numerous in N.W. Ulster where it is generally anglicised MacDaid and MacDevitt; also in use in Co. Mayo, anglicised Davitt, but whether, or not, the descent of the family is the same as that of Inishowen, I am unable to say. The local pronunciation is Mac Daeid.
