Mac Connaidh

Mac CONNAIDH—IVM'Conna, M'Conney, M'Cunny, M'Cony, MacCona, Conney, and, by 'translation,' Woods; 'son of Connadh' (an old Irish personal name); a scattered surname. Its anglicised forms are difficult to distinguish from those of Mac Coinnigh, which see; and MacCona may sometimes stand for MacDona. Moore, in his 'Manx Names' (p. 25), gives Quinney as an anglicised form of this surname, but the pronunciation in spoken Manx, as indicated by him, would rather point to Mac Coinnigh as the origin; and, as he shows (p. 28), Mac Cainnigh was an old Manx surname.
