Mac an BHREITHEAMHAN, Mac an BHREITHEAMHNAIGH, Mac an BHREITHIMH—VIIM'Abreham, M'Ebrehowne, M'Evrehune, M'Evrehoona, M'Evrehon, M'Brehuna M'Brehon, M'Vrehoune, Brehony, Breheny, Brohoon, and, by translation, Judge; 'son of the brehon,' or judge, (Irish 'breitheamh', gen. -theamhan and -thimh, 'breitheamhnach,' gen. -naigh); a common surname in many parts of Ireland, especialy in Connacht and West Ulster. There are, doubtless, several distinct families so called, each an offshoot of one or other of the great brehon families. The surname is now generally anglicised Judge, by translation. The form Mac an Bhreithimh, though common in the spoken language, is apparently modern. This surname is also found in Scotland, where it is anglicised Browne.
