DÉISE—XIDeise, Dece, Dease; doubtless 'of Deise,' the barony of Deece in Co. Meath; a Norman surname formed from an Irish place-name. The Annals at the year 1494 record the death of Gerald Deise, 'a good foreign youth of the Baron of Delvin's people.' The Deases resided at Turbotstown, and are one of the few old families who still retain their ancient patrimony.
