De Tiúit

de TIÚIT—XIde Tuite, Tuite; Norman 'de Tuite,' 'del Tuit,' i.e., of Tuit or Thuit, a frequent place-name in Normandy, of same meaning as the English thwaite, i.e., a woodland clearing. The presence of the article in the old form 'del Tuit' would seem to show that the surname was taken from the common noun rather than from the place-name. The Tuites were a distinguished Norman family, descended from Richard de Tuite who came over with Strongbow; and they enjoyed extensive estates in Longford, Meath and Westmeath down to the confiscations of the 17th century. The head of the family was Baron of Moycashel.
