de STÁBALTÚN—XIde Stapeltoun, de Stapulton, Stapelton, Stapleton; Norman 'de Stapeltoun,' i.e., of Stapleton, a common English place-name; the name of an old and distinguished Anglo-Norman family who settled, soon after the invasion, in Kilkenny and Tipperary. They assumed the Irish surname of Mac an Ghaill (which see), but were also called Galldubh, which see.
