de POIRTINGÉIL—XIde Portyngale, Portingale, Portingall, Portabello; i.e., from Portugal; a rare surname, peculiar to Youghal and district. In 1569, John Portingale was one of the townsmen of Youghal, as was Arthur Portingall thirty years later. The name is now strangely anglicised Portabello.
