de CUITLÉIR—XII—Quilter; Norman 'le Cutiler,' i.e., the cutler, maker of knives. This surname had come into Ireland before the end of the 13th century. Though always very rare, it still survives, but is now found chiefly in the neighbourhood of Listowelin Co. Kerry, where it is pronounced corruptly Cuillthéir in Irish and made Quilter in English.
