de BHÉAL—XII—de Veel, Veale; Norman 'le Veel,' i.e., the veal, the calf. Compare with de Bacún. This surname, which came into Ireland at the period of the Anglo-Norman invasion, is still well known in Co. Waterford, where it is pronounced de Bhial.
