COIPINGÉIR—XII—Copinger, Coppinger; Norse 'Kaupungr,' (a nickname); the name of a family of Norse extraction long settled in Cork, where in 1319 Stephen Coppinger was mayor of the city, as was William Coppinger in 1535. The Coppingers formed a kind of clan after the Irish fashion. Many of them were attained in 1642 and again in 1691. The name is generally pronounced Coipinéir.
