AIDHLEART—VIII—Athelard, Adelard, Ayllard, Eylard, Ellard; 'son of Adelard' (a Frankish personal name, also written Adelhard and Athelard, the same as the Anglo-Saxon Æthelheard); an old Anglo-Irish surname, dating back at least to the middle of the 13th century. In the time of Edward I, Robert Athelard of Athelardestoun, Co. Louth, was tenant-in-capite of the king.
