PAILÍS—XIPalys, Pattys, Pallice, Palles, Pallas; i.e., 'at the "palis" or stake-fenced enclosure,' from residence (French 'palis,' a stake. Compare with Irish 'pailís,' which enters into the composition of several place-names, as Pallaskenry, Pallasgreen, &c.); an old surname in Dublin, Louth and Cavan. In 1582, Patrick Palles of Dundalk obtained a grant of pardon from Queen Elizabeth. In 1642, William Pallys of Dublin and Andrew Pallys of Collatrath, Co. Cavan, were attainted; as were, in 1691, Andrew Pallace of Cloneanat, Co. Cavan, and Christopher Pallas of Dublin.
