Ó MEALLÁIN—IO Meallane, O Mellane, O Mallane, O'Mellon, Mellan, Mellon, Mallan, Mallen, (Mullen), &c. 'descendant of Meallán' (diminutive of ' meall,' pleasant); the name of an ecclesiastical family in Ulster—a branch of the Cinel Eoghain—who were hereditary keepers of the Bell of St. Patrick, known as the Bell of the Testament, and were seated in the parish of Donaghmore, near Dungannon, Co. Tyrone. The name is still common in Ulster, especially in Tyrone, Armagh and Antrim.
