BALBH—IX—Balfe; Irish 'Balbh,' Latin 'balbus,' i.e., the stammerer. Though the name is Irish, the family is of foreign origin. The Balfes came to Ireland at, or soon after, the Anglo-Norman invasion and settled in Dublin and Meath.
